YA - Winter Retreat Experience

On January 30-31 we had our first Young Adult (College & Career) Winter Retreat at Camp Van-Es.   Friday and Saturday were awesome days to relax, build community, and explore the book of Philippians.  The theme of the retreat was “Contentment in a Restless World.”

As Young Adults, do we find ourselves drifting from one thing to another?  Living in a world full of options and possibilities can tempt us to be passive, discontented, and restless.  There are also unforeseeable storms that come our way.  We need to be equipped to “stand firm” in Christ, so that we “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess” (Hebrews 10:23).

Friday night we explored some generational “labels” and how the negative labels serve as warnings for what we need to stand up against.  We were able to spend time identifying how we had personally been lead astray by cultural influences around us, leaving us discontented and empty.  For example, some labels identified that threaten our generation are: loneliness/individualism, high level of depression, directionless, and experiencing information overloaded.  We looked at these labels in light of the Philippians 4 and God’s response is to be counter-cultural by striving for unity with others; hearts that rejoice, steadfastness, and setting our focus back to God’s word.

Saturday we challenged ourselves in how we deal with the storms of this life.  Kris Schmidtke shared his personal experience of seeking God when walking through the sudden loss of his sister in a car accident a little over a year ago.  Are we people that become better or bitter?  Philippians 2 challenged us to check our attitudes.  Our true satisfaction in Christ is revealed through the dark seasons.  It was nice to have space to worship and take time to hear from God.

In the afternoon we focused on Philippians 3 with Matt & Amanda Kassian.  It is easy to rejoice when things are good, but what about when they are bad?   We reflected on rejoicing in all circumstances and learned to share in Christ’s victory on the cross.  It was great to have them share their personal journeys as God has been closing doors and opening new ones.

Closing the retreat, we talked about the goal we are pressing on towards. Philippians 3:14, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”  As citizens of heaven we are a unified body and on the same team in Christ.  Our goal is to know Christ more and have our satisfaction truly lie in Him.  Matthew 5:6blessed are they, which do hunger, and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Take a look at a small video that shows some of the moments.  We did not let the winter weather get to us as we played some outdoor capture the flag!  Please continue to pray for the Young Adult community as we pursue knowing Jesus better and lean into Him for guidance.
