Gate Community Summer - Day 34

Yesterday we continued our look at Matthew 13:1-23 establishing what the seed and soil represented. Today we will look more closely at the types of soils (the types of hearers).

First, let’s look at three types of bad soil that Jesus tells us about.

Bad Soil Example 1

As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

-------------------------

Worldly wisdom is the use of knowledge and information. It’s based on human understanding and reasoning, but it is foolishness to the Lord (1 Cor. 3:19a). “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight…”

Godly wisdom is the capacity to see things from the God’s viewpoint and respond in all aspects of our life according to what the Bible tells us!

Hearing Result = No Fruit

Bad Soil Example 2

Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

-------------------------

This person starts out super excited for God, but that fire is short-lived and the inevitable persecution or troubles of life overcome them because they have not firmly planted their roots beside streams of living waters

Hearing Result = Short-term fruit/Long-term lack of connection to God

Bad Soil Example 3

Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.

-------------------------

Thorns = Preoccupations of life

The Worries of the earthly world =

  • Popularity
  • Acceptance
  • Power
  • Friends

Deceitfulness of wealth =

  • This is about stuff
  • The more we have the happier we will be
  • Caught up in the pursuit of more stuff
  • If I can just have this… I will be…
  •

Hearing Result = No time for fruit or God

Good Soil

Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

-------------------------

Godly wisdom is the capacity to see things from the God’s viewpoint and respond in all aspects of our life according to what the Bible tells us!

  • Heart that is soft and receptive
  • Hungry and thirsty

Hearing Result = Produces fruit in a big time way
