Gate Community Summer - Day 32
On one occasion, Jesus dedicated an entire parable about ‘Hearing.’
Read Matthew 13:1-23
Through this parable, Jesus confronts us with the question… “How well do hear God?” This is seen in verse 9 when Jesus again echoes some of his words we read from other parts of his teaching… “Whoever has ears, let him hear.” A Christ-follower is one who listens to God. They listen to the Word of God.” Verse 16 confirms that those who hear are blessed… 16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.
Are you hearing God with your ears?
Let’s look more closely at this parable… A man went out into his field to sow seed. This farmer did not plant as farmers do today, with machinery. Everything was done manually. This farmer owned some land which was made up of very small fields. Between each of these small fields there was a pathway that provides access to his fields. When he goes to sow seed, he takes a bag of seed, hangs it over his shoulder, puts his hand in the bag and scatters the seed across the fields as he walks back and forth in the field. The result of this process is that seeds fall in many different places, both in and around the field.
The parable makes that clear to us:
- Some ‘seed’ fell along the path.
- Some ‘seed’ fell on rocky places.
- Some ‘seed’ fell among thorns.
- Still other ‘seed’ fell on good soil.
Over the next couple of days we will look at what the seed has to do with us "Hearing God."
