Gate Community Summer - Day 21
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth… In the beginning God and humanity communicated to each other as you and I are talking right now. Look at a different part of Genesis, one chapter later…
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
There are three things I learned about the early days of God and humanity from these verses…
- Humanity knew the sound of God’s footsteps
- God talked to humanity
- Humanity talked to God
Those were the early days… God and humanity stood hand in hand, able to talk to each other, but then the story goes, Adam and Eve disobeyed, ate the fruit, sin entered, and here is the result…
The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
The term we often use regarding the Fall, is that humanity became separated by God because of this disobedience. A chasm of sin stood between us, the created, and our Holy Creator God who cannot be in contact with sin. We focus a lot on the sin, but what gets lost in this chasm of separation is that we lost communication with God. It wasn’t lost completely but it became a shadow of what it was intended to be. The separation became greater and greater. The gap bigger and bigger.
This happened because our eyes were open to things like:
- Shame (clothes)
- Knowledge of good and evil
- Banishment from the garden (a new reality of the barriers between us and God)
- Work (or other things that take our focus away from God)
This is the reality (separation – lack of communication). But there is hope to hear God... come back tomorrow!
