Gate Community Summer - Day 17
As we looked in yesterday's blog, Peter and John were facing a crisis. Instead of running or hiding from the crisis, they created a community of Togetherness with fellow Christ-followers...
What was the first thing the community did together when they were faced with crisis?
Vs. 24a – When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.
The immediate response of the group was to pray.
When you are facing a crisis… what is your immediate response? Is it prayer? What do you pray for? Who do you pray with?
In this passage the word ‘together’ comes from the (Gk. homothymadon) and means in one accord. There was a unity amongst the people of God as they prayed. They prayed as one voice to their God. This wasn’t a new patter for them, this is something that they did… In Acts 2, it says that they devoted themselves to prayer. When you devote yourselves to something, you don’t just do it here and there… you do it all the time. When you want to get in shape, you don’t just do a work out here and there and nothing in between! No, you make it part of your life… it affects your activities, what you eat, how you sleep, etc… When the disciples and the young church devoted themselves to prayer… it affected every aspect of their life. It was part of everything they did.
“I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God, it changes me.” - C.S. Lewis
One of the understandings we need to have in order to be devoted to prayer as the early church was… is to understand just as they did, that we serve a Big God!
