Gate Community Summer - Day 1
This summer we (The Gate Community) will be posting a daily thought for our group to help keep our hearts and minds thinking in the same direction as the days of summer take us to all kinds of different places like camp, vacations or summer jobs.
We are often deterred in how we live out and share our faith because of fear of how people will respond to us. In these times, we forget that it is God who is in control. The early church was not fueled by fear, but by the power of the Holy Spirit. They courageously spoke the truth about Jesus no matter what the cost. For Stephen it cost him his life and in the wake of his death we are told in Acts 8:1 that a great persecution broke out against the church...
"A great wave of persecution began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem; and all the believers except the apostles were scattered through the regions of Judea and Samaria."
Did this deter the early church from proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ? No, because while the persecution may have been an attempt to squash the church once and for all, it was in fact the next step in God expanding the sphere of influence of his church as was promised in Acts 1:8...
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
The result of the persecution was not retreat, but of moving forward and continuing to share about Jesus as we are told in Acts 8:4 through the rest of the book of Acts...
"But the believers who were scattered preached the Good News about Jesus wherever they went."
Will you preach the Good News about Jesus wherever you go?
