But Who Do You Say That I Am?

Not A Fan #1 – Young Adults

But, who do you say I am?

Young Adults kicked off the Not a Fan series this past Wednesday night. Here are some reflections from the our discussions and conversations.

The church is hungry for authentic Jesus followers. The world is hungry for authentic Jesus followers. It starts with believing in your heart that Jesus is who he says he is. Do you believe he is who he says he is?

“Now it happened that as he was praying alone. The disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets or old has risen.” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” - Luke 9:18-20

The world has a lot of different definitions of Jesus, your friends, your family, your culture does too. However, it’s when we come back to the Word of God that we find with final authority the real Jesus.

I remember a significant decision time in my life, simply asking the question; “Jesus, who are you?” I realized how frequently I shape that answer around everything I have heard second hand, culture represents, or heartless repetition. So, I went back to the gospels reading Matthew, Mark, Luke, John as they highlight the birth, ministry, passion, and resurrection of Jesus.

Be renewed in your heart, soul, and mind in who Jesus was, what he did, what he said, and how he lives today. Be refreshed, the same Jesus you read about in scripture is alive in you and wants to empower you for the same life and to be his follower.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. - John 14:12

Challenge: Start reading through the gospels or one of them. Ask, Jesus to show you more of himself.

Linger on: What if you were to put your name where Peters name was in this passage. What is your response...

Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And _______________ answered, “The Christ of God.”

I have read the gospels many times in my life but I recently just read them again with this same question in mind! "Who is Jesus?" This time it was like seeing Jesus for the first time. He looked at people with such compassion. He saw them for who the really are and loved them! He healed anyone who came to him. And I felt deep in my heart that I love this man. And then he stood silently before Pilate, not defending himself and he was handed over to be killed. The soldiers spit in his face, slapped him and mocked him, whipped him and hung him. He died. I'm overcome with grief. He could have saved himself at any point. But he chose death so that I can have life. And like the centurion standing on the hill that day, I respond also, truly this man is Son of God,
